Mannar Fort

MannarFort (මන්නාරම් බලකොටුව) located on Mannar Island in Sri Lanka, is a historical site linked to the main island by a causeway.

Covering an area of approximately 125 square kilometers, Mannar Island is known for its vegetation and sandy terrain. The fort, originally built by the Portuguese in 1518, is square-shaped and features distinctive architectural elements that reflect its colonial past.

Historical Significance: The fort was constructed by Lopo Soares de Albergaria and was described by Portuguese chronicler António Bocarro in 1635. According to Bocarro, the fort was initially well-fortified with ramparts and bastions, although the defensive walls were relatively modest in height and thickness. The fort’s strategic location made it a significant site for the Portuguese, who profited from the local pearl fishery before it diminished.

In 1658, the Dutch captured the fort after a period of resistance from the Portuguese. While they reinforced the fortifications, there were no major modifications made. Over time, the fort’s importance waned, and it fell into disrepair.

Current Condition: Mannar Fort remains relatively well-preserved with four bastions and accessible ramparts. Although the buildings within the fort have not been well-maintained, visitors can freely roam the premises. Access to the top of the ramparts is available, offering panoramic views of the fort and its surroundings. Notable features include two rooms with broken slabs and iron bars, which may have served as prison cells. Additionally, visitors can spot what appears to be a church among the ruins and two watch towers, one of which is precariously close to the edge of the ocean.

Visiting Information: Visitors to Mannar Fort can explore the site without restrictions.

The fort offers a glimpse into the historical significance and provides a unique perspective on Sri Lanka’s colonial past.
