KaludiyaPokuna (Black Water Pool)

Kaludiya Pokuna, located at the foot of the western slopes of #Mihintale, is the largest pond in the area. This ancient site is believed by many experts to be the “Porodini Pokuna” mentioned in the inscriptions from the reign of King Mahinda IV. The name “Kaludiya Pokuna,” which translates to “Black Water Pool,” is said to have derived from the dark, reflective waters that mirror the surrounding trees and boulders, creating a tranquil and sombre atmosphere.

Advanced hydraulic civilization:
The Kaludiya Pokuna site is a testament to the advanced hydraulic civilization of ancient Sri Lanka. Around the pond, there are remnants of well-planned structures, including artificial moats that run through some buildings, such as bathhouses and toilets. These structures illustrate the sophisticated water management techniques employed in this historical era.

Religious and Residential Complex:
Surrounding the Kaludiya Pokuna is an ancient monastic complex, or arama, which includes various religious and residential structures. These include a stupa, an uposathaghara (poya-ge), where monks gathered for rituals, a cankamana patha (promenade for walking), and parivena and pasada (residential cells). The site also contains a janta ghara (bathhouse) and vacca kutti (lavatories), indicating the importance of cleanliness and ritual bathing.

Cave Dwelling:
A unique cave dwelling is located nearby, set under a massive overhanging boulder. Unlike typical brick and mortar structures, this cave incorporates smooth granite slabs into its construction, blending natural and man-made elements. Some scholars suggest that this cave may have been a bathing house connected to another pond that has since silted up.

Kaludiya Pokuna remains an important archaeological and spiritual site, offering a glimpse into the advanced engineering and monastic life of ancient Sri Lanka.
