Pitamaruwaruwa Mini World’s End in Madulsima

Discover the Hidden Beauty of #Pitamaruwaruwa Mini World’s End in Madulsima

Madulsima, also known as Madolsima, is a charming village in Sri Lanka, famous for its picturesque surroundings and one of the country’s five “Mini World’s End” escarpments, Pitamaruwa Mini World’s End. Located within a day’s distance from Ella and Badulla, this scenic viewpoint offers breathtaking views and is popular among Sri Lankan hikers and campers. The name “pitamaruwa” indicates “beauty,” a fitting description of the area’s stunning landscapes.

The hike and surrounding attractions:
The hike to Pitamaruwa Mini World’s End from the parking area is a short 1.5 km (1 mile) walk. The viewpoint sits on a rock that drops vertically by over 300 meters, with an elevation of 1388 m above sea level. From the vantage point, visitors can take in panoramic views of nearby precipices, valleys, and ridges.

A nearby viewpoint, Madulsima Pathana, located 1.3 km north of the parking area, offers another scenic outlook. This area is also home to several waterfalls, including Geradi Ella, Pessagama Ella, and Bessama Ella, which features a natural pool.

Camping and Accommodation:
Camping at Pitamaruwa Mini World’s End requires special permission, but there are several other campsites nearby, including:
Hills Camping Ground (4 km away)
Madulsima Nature Camping (7 km away)

For a more immersive experience, Rathkele Pathana (also called Ragala Mountain) offers a great sunrise vantage point and camping area just 4 km north of the Mini World’s End car park. Visitors should be prepared for cold temperatures before sunrise, windy conditions, and rapidly changing weather. A rain cover for tents is recommended, and leech protection is advised, although they are not as abundant as in some other regions of Sri Lanka.

For those who prefer more comfort, simple accommodation can be arranged near Rathkele Pathana, and a nearby star-category option is Madulsima Hobbit Resort, just 1.3 km from the escarpment.

Location and Accessibility:
Pitamaruwa Mini World’s End and Rathkele Pathana are part of the Roeberry Tea Estate and are located in the southeastern part of Sri Lanka’s central highlands. The easiest route to the area is via the B360 road from Passara, which is 36 km from Pitamaruwa Mini World’s End. The village is also accessible from Ella (67 km) and Badulla (55 km).

The surrounding Madulsima-Lunugala Range stretches over 30 km and offers additional hiking destinations such as Lunagala, Thattagala, and Kalugala. The entire area is part of the Badulla District in the Uva Province.
