In the 17th century, the Portuguese established the Bentota Fort at the mouth of the Bentota Ganga River, defining the southern boundary of their territory in Sri Lanka. Known locally as “Parangi Kotuwa”, the fort was strategically positioned to protect Portuguese interests in Colombo against incursions from Dutch-controlled Galle.

A Short-Lived Stronghold
In 1654, the Dutch seized the Bentota Fort during their campaign to control key Portuguese outposts, including Kalutara and Colombo. However, the Dutch deemed the Bentota Fort strategically insignificant and abandoned it, allowing it to fall into disrepair after securing Kalutara.

Colonial Transition to Hospitality
When the British took control of Sri Lanka’s maritime provinces in 1796, the fort was repurposed into the Bentota Rest House, offering travelers a place of respite. Its proximity to Colombo and the allure of freshwater oysters made it a favored destination during the British colonial era.

Modern Transformation
Between 1967 and 1969, the Rest House was demolished to pave the way for a new era in Bentota’s history. Renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa designed the Bentota Beach Hotel, a modernist marvel that became a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s burgeoning tourism industry. In 2019, this historic site was reimagined as Cinnamon Bentota Beach, blending luxury hospitality with a deep respect for its colonial heritage.

A Tale of Two Forts
The area also holds a lesser-known historical site, “Uda Kotuwa,” which adds depth to Bentota’s colonial narrative. Together, these forts embody the layered history of the region, from Portuguese ambitions to Dutch pragmatism and British transformation.
