Raxagala (Kinihira Kanda): The Hidden Gem of Dolosbage

Raxagala, also known as Kinihira Kanda, is the second-highest peak in the Dolosbage range, standing at 1,438 meters (4,718 feet) in height. It is one of the most recognizable peaks in Dolosbage, a village located in the Kandy District of Sri Lanka’s Central Province. Alongside Kabaragala, Raxagala is a key highlight of the region.

Locals refer to it as Kinihira Kanda, and it is also known as Paththini Amma Kanda. Another name, Wangedi Molgas Gala, is derived from its distinct shape, resembling a pestle and mortar.

How to Get to Raxagala
Visitors can reach Dolosbage via two primary routes. One route is from Mawanella via Bulathkohupitiya, and the other is from Colombo via Nawalapitiya. Upon reaching Raxawa village, where the Raxawa Estate is located, two paths lead to Raxagala. The left trail is a clearer path along the tea estate, while the tea farm route is slightly more challenging but rewarding. Both routes feature a marked rock with an arrow indicating the way.

The Hiking Experience
Once past the tea estate, the real adventure begins in the jungle. Some markings from previous travelers guide the way to the summit. The hike takes approximately two hours to complete.

Best Time to Visit
The ideal hiking season is between January and March, when rainfall is minimal, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable trek.

History of Raxagala
Many Sri Lankan mountains are linked to the legendary King Ravana, and Raxagala is no exception. According to folklore, Raxagala housed Ravana’s weapons factory. A fire allegedly destroyed an ancient iron plant here, spreading ashes to a nearby village, which was later called Alugolla. Stone steps along the route suggest historical significance, with archaeologists investigating links to the Raksha tribes, after whom the mountain might have been named.

Essential Tips Before You Visit
Proper gear, including sturdy hiking boots and warm clothing, is necessary as temperatures drop unexpectedly. Sudden downpours are common in the region, so waterproof clothing is advisable. The trail is easy to lose, and first-time visitors should consider hiring a local guide. To protect the environment, visitors should avoid bringing plastic or polythene.

Nearby Attractions
Nearby attractions include Kabaragala Peak, the highest in the Dolosbage range; tea plantations offering stunning views and a chance to experience Sri Lanka’s tea culture; and camping spots that make Raxagala an excellent location for adventure seekers looking to experience overnight camping under the stars.

Additional Activities
In addition to the hiking experience, Raxagala offers an opportunity for birdwatching, with many endemic species found in the surrounding forests. The region is also home to various medicinal plants used in traditional Ayurvedic treatments. Moreover, sunrise and sunset views from the peak are mesmerizing, making the hike even more rewarding for photography enthusiasts. The night sky at Raxagala is particularly captivating, making it an ideal spot for stargazing away from urban light pollution. Travelers can also explore hidden caves within the mountain that are believed to have been used by monks and ancient travelers.

Raxagala (Kinihira Kanda) is a true hidden gem for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike. With its rich legends, stunning landscapes, and thrilling trekking routes, it promises an unforgettable journey into Sri Lanka’s natural and historical heritage.
