Raxagala, also known as Kinihira Kanda, is the second-highest peak in the Dolosbage range, standing at 1,438 meters (4,718 feet) in height. It is one of the most recognizable peaks in Dolosbage, a village located in the Kandy District of Sri Lanka’s Central Province. Alongside Kabaragala, Raxagala is a key highlight of the region.

Locals refer to it as Kinihira Kanda, and it is also known as Paththini Amma Kanda. Another name, Wangedi Molgas Gala, is derived from its distinct shape, resembling a pestle and mortar.

How to Get to Raxagala
Visitors can reach Dolosbage via two primary routes. One route is from Mawanella via Bulathkohupitiya, and the other is from Colombo via Nawalapitiya. Upon reaching Raxawa village, where the Raxawa Estate is located, two paths lead to Raxagala. The left trail is a clearer path along the tea estate, while the tea farm route is slightly more challenging but rewarding. Both routes feature a marked rock with an arrow indicating the way.

The Hiking Experience
Once past the tea estate, the real adventure begins in the jungle. Some markings from previous travelers guide the way to the summit. The hike takes approximately two hours to complete.

History of Raxagala
Many Sri Lankan mountains are linked to the legendary King Ravana, and Raxagala is no exception. According to folklore, Raxagala housed Ravana’s weapons factory. A fire allegedly destroyed an ancient iron plant here, spreading ashes to a nearby village, which was later called Alugolla. Stone steps along the route suggest historical significance, with archaeologists investigating links to the Raksha tribes, after whom the mountain might have been named.
