Mystic Lovers Leap Fall at NuwaraEliya

Location: Havaeliya, Nuwara Eliya District
Lovers Leap Waterfall is a breathtaking 30-meter-high cascade, originating from the streams of Sri Lanka’s highest mountain, Piduruthalagala (2,524 m). The water flows over rugged granite ledges before being collected in a reservoir for drinking purposes.

The Legend of Lovers Leap
The waterfall derives its name from a tragic love story. According to legend, a young prince, while hunting in the forest, lost his way and was rescued by a beautiful village maiden. The two fell deeply in love, but their union was not accepted by the prince’s people. Faced with an impossible choice, they chose to immortalize their love by leaping together from the summit of the waterfall to their death.
Superstitious locals believe the area is haunted and tend to avoid it at night.

How to Get There
Lovers Leap Waterfall is located about 3 km from Nuwara Eliya town. You can reach the falls via a scenic route:

  • A 3-wheeler ride will take you part of the way, leaving only a 250-meter walk on a fairly even gravel path to the falls.
  • Alternatively, you can hike 400 meters uphill along a narrow tarred road or take a shortcut through a tea estate, which is steeper but offers a more adventurous experience.

Nearby Attractions
Being in the heart of Nuwara Eliya, the waterfall is surrounded by numerous hotels and guesthouses, making it an ideal stop for travelers exploring the misty hills of Sri Lanka.
