Discover the Timeless Beauty of Peessa #Ella Falls

Rising to an impressive height of 45 meters, Peessa Ella Falls is a captivating natural wonder located in the Uva region. Unlike many other waterfalls, it flows consistently throughout the year, making it a remarkable sight even during droughts. During the rainy season, the waterfall transforms into a spectacular dual-stream cascade, enhancing its already stunning appeal.

Peessa Ella holds historical significance, with its name derived from the old Sinhala word “peessa,” meaning a gathering place. It is believed that this location served as a hub for King Dutugemunu’s workmen during the construction of religious structures. Today, the Peessa Canal, originating near the falls, irrigates approximately 20 hectares of farmland and powers the surrounding area through five turbines.

Directions to Peessa Ella Falls
The nearest town is Passara in the Badulla District. From Passara, take the Passara-Bibile road and turn right at the 22nd milepost. Follow the road south for 6 kilometers to the Peessa Agri-Colony. Alternatively:

  • From Badulla: Travel towards Passara on the A5 road or take the B113 road from Ella.
  • From Buttala: Take the B359 route via Hingurukaduwa and Pelwatte.

Look for the Uva Tourism Ministry’s signboard near Lunugala on the A5 road. The steps to the falls can be found at a double hairpin bend about 5.5 kilometers into the road to Peessagama.

For those who enjoy trekking, a 1.5-kilometer path along the Peessa Canal offers an immersive journey through savannah grasslands, accompanied by the sounds of wildlife.
